Golden Hour Sunset Couples Shoot with Alex and Emilie at Tom’s Thumb in Scottsdale Arizona
I followed Emilie on Instagram shortly after I moved to Arizona, I’ve been wanting to shoot with her ever since. We finally decided to meet for a session with her partner, Alex For a sunset couples shoot at Tom’s Thumb Trailhead at the Mcdowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. I’ve hiked here many times, and have done an individual portrait shoot with my friend, Jess in early May. But I really wanted to shoot a couple in this location!
I’ve had a camera in my hand for the past six years, but this was actually my very first couples shoot outside of a wedding setting! (crazy, right?) So honestly, I was a little nervous prior to this thinking that it would be difficult to direct two people vs. one. There was absolutely nothing to worry about. Interestingly, I found it easier posting two people together instead of one! I discovered that when shooting couples, it’s so much easier for emotion to naturally come out.
Just from this first shoot I’ve already fallen in love with shooting couples, especially in beautiful locations like this. My passion for the outdoors definitely expands into my photography. And there’s nothing more satisfying to me than capturing people looking their best in natural, beautiful locations.
Emilie and Alex were such a joy to work with! They were completely open to my ideas and have amazing chemistry together on and off the camera. They’re both into climbing and are lovers of the outdoors as much as I am. Moving forward with my photography, I want to continue to work with couples who are totally down to explore (and hike a little bit) to get to amazing locations.
I’m so happy with how all of these images came out. For the first half hour we shot with the sun directly on them, which is something I typically avoid. But the glowing yellow grass with the blue, open skies in the background really made these images stand out to me It was rewarding stepping outside of my comfort zone and tried something different. But especially after the sun set, the sky created beautiful cotton candy sunset hues. From the start to to the end of the shoot, the lighting, setting and Alex + Emilie were amazing!
We saw so many adorable baby cottontail bunnies throughout the shoot! This little one was great at posing.
